It is hard to ignore the overwhelmingly growing popularity of high definition television or HDTV. It's among the top on the wish lists of many techies out there. Still, there are many people who are quite hesitant to buy an HDTV simply because it sounds intimidating like a hi-tech appliance. But buying an HDTV shouldn't be confusing at all. Here are some simple steps on how to buy an HDTV.

First Step - check if your area has HDTV broadcast. It would be useless to buy HDTV if you don't have HDTV signal in the first place. You won't be able to take full advantage of your HDTV unit if you don't have a signal. Worse, the bad quality of some regular channels can actually be multiplied on an HDTV, especially a large-screened one.

Second Step - set your budget limit. The ultimate limit to your HDTV buying is your money. If you don't have the money, you won't be able to buy your HDTV for obvious reasons, unless Santa gives it to you for Christmas.

Third Step - Look for an HDTV unit that has all the connections you need for your accessories. You might not be able to use the other parts of your entertainment system if the HDTV doesn't have the correct input and output options. Also consider connectivity for other appliances you might get in the future.

Fourth Step - look for an HDTV that has full features. You should look for a set that has a complete Dolby Digital Surround Sound. Apart from vivid pictures, you want clear sounds as well. You also will need a set that can switch from HDTV to SDTV automatically so that you can quickly adjust between formats of TV channels. You might also want an HDTV unit that has a program guide installed so that it would be truly convenient.

Step Five - make sure that your antenna or satellite dish system can be used with HDTV. This way, when you bring home the HDTV, you may use it right away. You would of course want to enjoy your HDTV as soon as you get home.

Step Six - ask the HDTV dealer to demonstrate the set's features. This will tell you how hard or easy to use the unit is. This will ensure that you would be comfortable using the HDTV once you get home.

Once you complete these steps, you can then head for the cashier, pay for the HDTV and take it home. But don't forget the last and most important step, which is to ENJOY.
