Lighting in a room which houses your home theater system plays a crucial role in maximizing your home theater equipment. Adequate lighting can make a big difference in a cinematic experience and knowing the basics is a breeze especially if you have experience in electrical wirings and/or lighting design in other areas of your home.

First things first

There are three types of lighting namely task lighting, ambient lighting, and accent lighting. Task lighting refers to light sources which are used to do specific tasks in a room, such as reading a book. Often, task lighting refers to fluorescent and pin lights that use white light or any source of bright light to do a specific human activity. Meanwhile ambient lighting refers to those which are used to create an ambiance or mood in a room. Lastly, accent lighting is composed of lighting fixtures that highlight specific aspects of a room such as a spotlight for an artwork.

It is important to be aware of these three types of lighting because the use and/or the combination of these three in the room will make or break your home theater lighting design.

A systemized plan

To design the lighting of your home theater, you must first figure out the layout of your room. Establishing the furniture layout is the only way to know where you will position the lights on your ceiling. After you have figured out the layout of your furniture in your floor plan, that is the time that you do a corresponding ceiling plan for your lighting lay out. To do this, simply trace your floor plan and draw the lighting layout depending on the use of the three lighting types discussed earlier.

It is important that you also take note of any built-in furniture that are designed from floor to ceiling, and do a separate lighting plan for these fixtures if needed. If you are still unsure of how to go about designing your home theater lighting design, then familiarizing yourself with the types of lighting available in the local lighting shop might be of help. Since you know the types of lighting, you can easily distinguish the types of lighting sold in the store then figure out which may or may not be purchased for your home theater.

Finally, be sure to ask the help of a certified electrician in carrying out your home theater lighting design. While lighting design may be viewed as something that contributes to the aesthetics of a room, there are safety standards that must be observed to prevent fire hazards in your home.
